Machine Republic

Sixteen years. Deliberately small.

Two lines converging into one steady line, while a second line rockets upward and off the chartWe stayed flat on purpose.OTHERS.AB2010SMALLONPURPOSE.

Machine Republic started as two separate businesses that made more sense together.

Sean was running a web development agency. I was running a social media consultancy. Same clients. Same values. Same instinct that software was the more interesting problem.

In 2010 we merged. Built Wixel Software Solutions – a boutique studio for early-stage founders and new products.

For over a decade we kept it deliberately small. While other studios chased growth – more clients, more staff, more overhead – we capped the projects we'd take on each year.

That constraint kept the work good and the team sane.

Small core team, specialist contractors when the work calls for it. Always remote, long before it became the default. We've built products that went from zero to millions of users. We've also seen what kills a good idea early.

We're honest about both.

In 2022 we rebranded as Machine Republic. Sharper focus: data, machine learning, AI, and product work for founders who know what they're building.

We stepped back from angel investing and the broader portfolio work that had crept in. Fewer things, done properly.

People ask whether AI threatens a software studio.

It doesn't. AI eliminates the need for large teams to produce software. It doesn't eliminate the need for people who understand it deeply. A small, experienced studio that knows how to work with these tools is more competitive now than it was five years ago.

Not less.

AI eliminates the need for large teams to produce software. It doesn't eliminate the need for people who understand it deeply.

Sixteen years in. We've been around enough blocks to know the difference between a problem worth solving and one worth avoiding. What we're best at: working with founders at the stage where everything is still uncertain and the decisions actually matter.

That judgment is the thing we're most confident selling.
